Plan your trip

Crystal River vacations, planned by people who keep coming back

Crystal River is a small Gulf Coast town on Florida's Nature Coast, about 90 minutes north of Tampa. It is the only place in the country where you can legally swim with wild manatees, and it is surrounded by spring-fed rivers, grass flats, and some of the best scalloping and fishing in the state. Here is how to plan the trip, and where to stay when you do.

Why come

What Crystal River is known for

The manatees are the headline. From November through March, several hundred West Indian manatees gather in the 72°F water of Three Sisters Springs and the spring-fed canals around Kings Bay. Crystal River is the only place in the United States where it is legal to get in the water and swim with them, and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge runs guided tours every morning of the season.

The water is the rest of the story. Kings Bay is fed by dozens of springs that stay 72°F year-round, so kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling are good in every season. The Gulf Coast just offshore is world-class for scalloping in the summer and for snook, redfish, and tarpon the rest of the year. Downtown Crystal River has a genuinely good food scene and a handful of breweries, and it has not been overrun by tourism the way the bigger Florida beach towns have.

When to visit

The Crystal River calendar

There is no bad time to come, but there is a best time depending on what you want. The two seasons that fill up fastest are manatee season in winter and scallop season in summer.

November to March

Manatee season

Hundreds of West Indian manatees move into the 72°F springs to escape the cooler Gulf. Peak count runs late December through mid-February. It is the busiest and most magical time to visit, and it books up first.

July 1 to September 24

Bay scallop season

Snorkel for scallops in the shallow grass flats off the Crystal River and Homosassa coast. Bring a boat or book a guided scallop trip. Limits and the exact dates are set each year by the FWC.

Year-round

The springs

Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs hold a steady 72°F all year. Spring and fall bring warm air, thinner crowds, and the easiest kayaking and paddleboarding of the year.

Summer

On the water

Long days for the dock, the flats, and the Gulf. Snook, redfish, and tarpon run the coast, and the canal behind the house is a no-wake zone that makes launching simple.

What to do

Things to do in Crystal River

Nov to Mar

Swim with manatees at Three Sisters Springs

Crystal River is the only place in the U.S. where you can legally swim with West Indian manatees. November through March, hundreds gather in the 72° springs at the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, five minutes from the house.

5 min drive · or by boat from your dock

Year-round

Kayak or paddleboard the springs

We do not keep kayaks at the house and we do not recommend launching from our dock — the canal is rocky and oyster-edged. Better plan: rent from a real launch point a few minutes away.

5 to 10 min drive to rental shops

Year-round

Rent a boat for the day

Bring your own 27 ft-and-smaller boat and dock at the private floating dock, or rent one for the day. Crystal River has flats, channels, and the open Gulf within thirty minutes. Excellent for fishing, scalloping, sandbar days, and sunset cruises.

Rentals 5 to 15 min away

Jul 1 to Sep 24

Scalloping in the Gulf

July 1 through Sept. 24, the shallow grass flats off Crystal River fill with bay scallops you can hand-pick while snorkeling. Bring home dinner.

30 min by boat

Year-round

Dinner downtown

For waterfront seafood, start with Crump's Landing, Waterfront Social, Riverfront Social, Crackers, Bayside Seafood, and The Crab Plant. For bars and bar food, St. John's Tavern is the nightlife move with connecting bars in the plaza, and Tipsy Tarpon is a tiki bar on the water. For sports bars, Lollygaggers and Norton's are the easy picks.

5 min drive

Year-round

Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park

Old-school Florida wildlife park 20 minutes south. Manatees year-round, gators, bobcats, and a 1960s underwater observatory you walk down into.

20 min drive

Year-round

Fishing the flats and the Gulf

Crystal River sits on some of the best inshore fishing on Florida's Nature Coast. Redfish and snook on the flats, sea trout in the grass, tarpon in summer, and grouper offshore. Launch from your own dock or hire a guide who already knows the tides.

Flats minutes from the dock

Year-round

Swim the springs at Hunter Springs Park

You don't need a tour to get in the water. Hunter Springs Park has a free swimming spring, a small sandy beach, and a kayak launch right on Kings Bay, a few minutes from the house. The spring water holds 72 degrees year-round.

5 min drive

Year-round

Day trips: Rainbow Springs, Weeki Wachee, Cedar Key

Crystal River is a great home base for the rest of the Nature Coast. Rainbow Springs and its waterfalls, the classic Weeki Wachee mermaid show, and the old fishing village of Cedar Key are all an easy drive.
