The area

The Crystal River guide we send our friends.

Crystal River is the only place in the U.S. where you can legally swim with wild manatees. It's also home to the clearest spring water in Florida, the best scalloping on the Gulf Coast, and a downtown you can walk in 15 minutes. Here's what we'd actually do with three days.

Swim with manatees at Three Sisters Springs
5 min drive · or by boat from your dock

Nov to Mar

Swim with manatees at Three Sisters Springs

Crystal River is the only place in the U.S. where you can legally swim with West Indian manatees. November through March, hundreds gather in the 72° springs at the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, five minutes from the house.

!

Host tip · Book a 6:30 AM tour with River Ventures or Bird's Underwater (in business 30+ years, public tours from ~$60). Earlier means calmer water, fewer boats, and the best light. Both shops also rent kayaks and paddleboards if you want to go on your own.

Kayak or paddleboard the springs
5 to 10 min drive to rental shops

Year-round

Kayak or paddleboard the springs

We do not keep kayaks at the house and we do not recommend launching from our dock — the canal is rocky and oyster-edged. Better plan: rent from a real launch point a few minutes away.

!

Host tip · Hunter Springs Kayaks (3-, 5-, and 8-hour rentals at 36 NE 4th St, next to Hunter Springs Park), Crystal River Watersports (large fleet, downtown launch), and River Ventures (full-service, includes manatee tours). Clear-bottom kayaks are available and worth it. Reserve online during manatee season.

Rent a boat for the day
Rentals 5 to 15 min away

Year-round

Rent a boat for the day

Bring your own 27 ft-and-smaller boat and dock at the private floating dock, or rent one for the day. Crystal River has flats, channels, and the open Gulf within thirty minutes. Excellent for fishing, scalloping, sandbar days, and sunset cruises.

!

Host tip · Twin Rivers Marina, just up the road, is the closest powerboat rental (a marina, not a public ramp). Plantation Marina (Crystal River's main marina, pontoons + center consoles + personal watercraft), Crystal River Watersports (downtown), and Pete's Pier (closer to the springs) also run daily rentals. Book a week ahead in summer. Trailering your own boat? The closest public ramp is the Fort Island Trail ramp, which gets shallow at low tide, so check the tide first. Plantation is next-closest (also shallow at low tide), and Pete's Pier has the deepest water you never have to worry about at any tide.

Scalloping in the Gulf
30 min by boat

Jul 1 to Sep 24

Scalloping in the Gulf

July 1 through Sept. 24, the shallow grass flats off Crystal River fill with bay scallops you can hand-pick while snorkeling. Bring home dinner.

!

Host tip · Most local captains run half-day scalloping charters for $400 to $600 with gear included. Aripeka Charters and Salty Aces both come recommended. Hunter Springs Kayaks also runs seasonal scallop tours starting in July. The flats off Crystal River are productive every year.

Dinner downtown
5 min drive

Year-round

Dinner downtown

For waterfront seafood, Riverfront Social is our personal favorite in town (the steak is great). After that: Crump's Landing, Waterfront Social, Crackers, Bayside Seafood, and The Crab Plant. For bars and bar food, St. John's Tavern is the nightlife move with connecting bars in the plaza, and Tipsy Tarpon is a tiki bar on the water. For sports bars, Lollygaggers and Norton's are the easy picks.

!

Host tip · Friday nights downtown turn into a small block party. Live music, food trucks, locals. Worth driving in even if you were planning to stay home.

Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park
20 min drive

Year-round

Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park

Old-school Florida wildlife park 20 minutes south. Manatees year-round, gators, bobcats, and a 1960s underwater observatory you walk down into.

!

Host tip · The underwater fish bowl at the headspring is the best $5 photo opportunity in Florida.

Fishing the flats and the Gulf
Flats minutes from the dock

Year-round

Fishing the flats and the Gulf

Crystal River sits on some of the best inshore fishing on Florida's Nature Coast. Redfish and snook on the flats, sea trout in the grass, tarpon in summer, and grouper offshore. Launch from your own dock or hire a guide who already knows the tides.

!

Host tip · Hire a flats guide out of Crystal River or Homosassa for a half-day (roughly $450 to $600, gear and bait included) and you'll be on fish without guessing. Prefer to go on your own? Bring a boat 27 ft and smaller to the dock, launch on a rising tide, and work the grass edges around Kings Bay and the river mouth. Check the tide chart first; the canal gets shallow at low water.

Swim the springs at Hunter Springs Park
5 min drive

Year-round

Swim the springs at Hunter Springs Park

You don't need a tour to get in the water. Hunter Springs Park has a free swimming spring, a small sandy beach, and a kayak launch right on Kings Bay, a few minutes from the house. The spring water holds 72 degrees year-round.

!

Host tip · Go early to beat the summer crowd and the parking crunch. The roped swim area is shallow and calm, good for kids, and you can paddle out toward Three Sisters Springs from the same launch. In winter the manatees move in, so swimming access shifts to protect them; check the current rules posted at the park.

Day trips: Rainbow Springs, Weeki Wachee, Cedar Key
30 to 75 min drive

Year-round

Day trips: Rainbow Springs, Weeki Wachee, Cedar Key

Crystal River is a great home base for the rest of the Nature Coast. Rainbow Springs and its waterfalls, the classic Weeki Wachee mermaid show, and the old fishing village of Cedar Key are all an easy drive.

!

Host tip · Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon (about 40 minutes) has clear-water swimming and tubing. Weeki Wachee Springs (about an hour south) still runs the underwater mermaid show and a spring-fed water park. Cedar Key (about 75 minutes north) is quiet Old Florida for sunset, oysters, and clam chowder. Pick one per trip rather than all three in a day.
