Three Sisters Springs, what to know before you go

Three Sisters Springs is a cluster of three small springs inside the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. The water runs about 72°F year-round and is the most photographed manatee gathering in Florida.

There are three legal ways to see it. You can walk a boardwalk that loops over the springs. You can paddle to the mouth on a kayak or paddleboard. You can snorkel into the buffer zone from a boat in Kings Bay. The boardwalk and the in-water options operate on different access rules.

Boardwalk access (year-round)

The boardwalk is the safest bet during peak manatee weeks. You park at the Three Sisters Springs Center off NW 1st Avenue, ride a shuttle to the refuge, and walk the loop. Adults are $20 in season, $12.50 off-season. Kids 6 to 15 are about half that.

Best window is 7 to 10 a.m. The light is good, the manatees are still bunched, and the boardwalk has not filled with day-trippers yet. By 11 a.m. on a cold January Saturday the line is two hours.

In-water access (rules vary by season)

From November 15 to March 31, the spring run itself is closed to swimmers. You snorkel up to the marked buffer line and float there. Manatees move freely in and out, and they will pass within an arm's length if you stay still.

Outside manatee season (April 1 – November 14), the spring run is fully open. The water is still 72°F. The grass is so visible the bottom looks fake. This is the underrated season for swimmers.

Paddling to the mouth

Hunter Springs Park is the closest free public launch. Rent a kayak or paddleboard from one of the downtown outfitters or bring your own. The paddle is about 15 minutes through a no-wake zone. You tie up at the entrance and watch from the boat or slip in with a mask. The view from a clear-bottom kayak is the easiest way to see manatees without getting wet.

Practical notes

Pack a refillable water bottle, sunscreen safe for the springs (mineral, not chemical), and shoes you can get wet in. Phones in waterproof pouches handle the splash. The springs have no food on site so eat before or after, and downtown Crystal River is five minutes by car.

Sunrise at the springs, then back to the house

The boardwalk is a 12-minute drive. Most guests pair an early springs run with breakfast at the house and the dock by 10.
